It was minutes to dusk and we all waited with anticipation in our minds. Finally it was down to our final mission. One last mission and I could finally taste my sweet bunk once again. I could remember six days ago before we went out for our final exercise. I saw that t shirt and jeans of mine hanging by the closet. With believe that I will come back 7 days later to wear them and roam down the streets of Taiwan.
But before that reward, I must first be tested out in the jungle depths of Taiwan so ensure that all who came would return back to Singapore as Warriors. Thus we waited for our PC to announce the posting we are going to receive. Finally my PC read out the posting. “Hamza will be my runner, if he can’t continue, then I will carry the signal set for him.” With that I knew that he is going to test me. Cause of all my platoon mates, I am the only guy that is yet to be tested. My combat physique is never there, but this time, I won’t disappoint the whole platoon.
We waited for the sky to turn dark. I was sitting right next to my PC, asking his army life, sharing around life stories was what army was mainly about. The talk last for almost hours till the rain started to pour. Usually in Singapore the exercise will be place on hold, but in Taiwan, the battle has to go on. We brave the cold rainy night.
I remembered crossing streams, thick bushes, walking in the dark night, not knowing what was ahead of us. We walked by graveyards as if they were jus rocks of ornaments just beside our walkway, just to reach our location. 0215 hours, we reached our Form up point. With 3 hours to spare, we were given some resting time. We slept by the toilet but who could. Each of us were shivering for the cold cold night. Nothing to warm us up. Just our body heat. I wanted it to end badly, I wanted the sun to shine as bright as possible at that moment. But nothing came to me. I was frozen as I stood by wandering my fate. All for the nation, all for the nation.
Time came. We went for our last attack. Expended our rounds our smoke, we were physically brutal. Our anger our frustration were all displayed as we tear down the enemy base. N alast the war ended. I took the situation report from my PC and coms on the PRC 840 like a soldier whom was happy that the war ended. My PC seemed happy the whole deal was over. But codename “the bird” didn let us go easy. He declared one casualty and we have to casevack him to the golden Buddha. 8 km mind you 8 km we took turns to carry the body on the strectcher. Some of us almost gave up. It was like a war story, not the fighting part but the survival part, we were “crying” for it to end. Up the mountain down the mountain. Our mind was far exhausted, not mentioning our dead driven body. Walking and walking till someone shouted. “its there, we are almost there!!!”. The words acted like a heroin surge in our blood. We pushed our last drop of energy to the location.
There, the golden Buddha sat to welcome our return, like warrior. We cried we laugh we shouted. The feeling, only we can feel, started together, no one fall out and we ended it together, like a platoon, like a band of brothers.
Cheers Platoon 2 Charlie 42th ASLC Batch!!!
